Title: Moments 1
Moments series
Format: 180 x 200 cm – 71” x 79”
Weight: 2,240 g – 4 lb 33 oz
Date: 2011 – 2016
No. 182.2018.1
Technique : 7,644 textile squares 3-cm wide, hand-assembled and quilted on a canvas base with a silk core
Description: as a student at the famous Bauhaus school, Karl Hermann Haupt conducted visual experimentations in 1923 and 1924. He explored the effects of lines of force, the links between black and white, positive and negative, based on photographic collages
Starting from a collage of photographs by Karl Hermann Haupt- a snowscape repeated in 24 minuscule rectangles (2.8 x 5.5 cm) – Sabine Cibert retains the principle of repeating the motif and its mirror, but with a larger format that accentuates the visual effect of light diffraction and vibration
The block’s change in direction, the very broad colour palette and the great variety of weaves all work to make the light vibrate, creating a pixellised image, as if diffracted, an echo that can propagate and bounce back in all directions
The rigid lines help create a dynamic atmosphere of panoptic motion
Title: Moments 2
Moments series
Format: 183 x 205 cm – 81” x 72”
Weight: 2,040 g – 4 lb 18 oz
Date: 2011 – 2016
No. 187.2016.4
Technique: 7,644 textile squares 3-cm wide, hand-assembled and quilted on a canvas base with a silk core
Description: there are identical convulsive movements in the panels entitled Moments 1 and 2. Onlookers navigate between microcosm and macrocosm, convergence and divergence, as diagonal lines and diamond shapes swell up, even when trapped within sine curves
These works each serve as a sharp reminder of the artist’s architectural background. The repeating diamond pattern, the tiny squares marking the work, a glimpse of objects and plants in the fabric prints all give visitors strolling past the illusion of getting to the heart of a city, or rather its form, in the grip of giddying metamorphosis
Title: Moments 3
Moments series
Format: 186 x 210 cm – 73” x 82”
Weight: 2,025 g – 4 lb 17 oz
Date: 2011 – 2016
No. 188.2016.5
Technique : for each grid pattern, 7,644 textile squares 3-cm wide have been hand-assembled and quilted on a canvas base with a silk core
Description: starting with a collage of photographs by Karl Hermann Haupt – a snowscape repeated in 24 minuscule rectangles (2.8 x 5.5 cm) – the idea of repeating the motif and its mirror has been preserved
The textile fragments’ colours and weaves, the way the block appears to change direction, causes the light to vibrate
Moments 3 is somewhat different to the other works in the series. As the third grid pattern in the Moments series, this composition comprises greater numbers of blocks elaborated in light of those on either side. Contemplating each of these Moments in turn underscores their increasingly complex architecture, more delicate motion and greater scenic depth, induced by the contrasting modulation of the tiny squares. Likewise, each of these Moments acts as a necessary milestone, forcing a moment of contemplation
