Winter 2
Thaw series
Format : 132 x 203 cm – 4ft x 4in x 6ft 8in
Weight : 1.420 g – 3 lb 2 oz
Date : 2018 – 2023
No. 275.2023.23
Technique: 23 blocks of 459 textiles squares, hand-assembled in three dimensions, and two 459-square blocks assembled with a smooth finish.
4,675 3-cm squares
Descriptif: From the trickle of a liquid cooling, as if halted by the temperature or the wind, the composition of Winter 2 was drawn as a mirror image of Winter 1, on a smaller scale. The colour range has taken on a greener hue. The dotted lines of quilting accentuate the scale effect.
In the bottom-left corner, the contrasting texture of the two blocks assembled in classic fashion, contrive to produce a watermark effect, like a throwback to another, smoother cap of ice.
Title: Magma 2
Magma series
Format: 132 x 204 cm – 4ft 4in x 6ft 8in
Weight: 1.700 g – 3 lb 12 oz
Date: 2020-2023
No. 271.2023.19
Technique: Hand-stitched: twelve blocks with a relief effect and thirteen smooth blocks
The broken lines of quilting cut diagonally through individual squares or pairs of juxtaposed squares.
4,675 textile squares 3-cm wide
Description: Magma 2 conjures up cooling lava that no longer flows freely, in the grip of the contradictory physical forces of gravity and falling temperature.
In the same chromatic range as Magma 1 – inspired by tablets adorned with calligraphy in a Korean temple – Magma 2 has been composed in a smaller format.
The thirteen smooth blocks alternating with twelve blocks assembled with a relief effect produce a vibratory sensation and depth.
Title: Semagramme 219
Semagram 219
Semagram series
Format: 71 x 136 cm – 2ft 4in x 4ft 6in
Weight: 0.495 g – 1 lb 2 oz
Date: 2020 – 2022
No. 219.2022.3
Technique: Hand-stitched. A reverse assembly with a 3-D effect, except for one horizontal edge and one vertical.
2,418 textile squares 3-cm wide
Description: As for works in the Moments Series, the Semagrams reprise the lines of force in a photographic collage by Karl Hermann Haupt, a Bauhaus student from the early 20th century.
In this Semagrams Series, the decision to reduce both the colour palette and the format augments the visual effect. More vibrant, the composition with its criss-cross white lines seems to be imbued with tension.
Central to the composition, two drawings from the original block are complete, surrounded by ten partial blocks, suggesting the full deployment of the drawing.
The two off-centre, concentric quilted spokes enhance the dynamic effect and holds the three layers together.
Title: Aube 275 et Aube 276
Dawn 275 and 276
Dawn series
Format: Two panels, each 64 x 41 cm – 2ft 1in x 1ft 4in
Weight: Two panels, each 0.160 g – 6 oz
Date: 2018 – 2023
Nos. 276.2023.24 and 277.2023.25
Technique: Textiles assembled by hand on the reverse side to produce a blurry relief effect.
Three layers quilted on canvas with a silk core.
459 3-cm squares, twice
Description: Initiated during a research project proposed in 2018, the Dawn series explores the imperceptible shifts in colour at daybreak. Patiently collected fabrics in varying shades, materials and weaves recreate the first glimmers of light as night fades away.
Breaking free for the first time from the lines of force that lent structure to the composition of her works, Sabine Cibert now distributes textures and weaves across an entire, unchanging visual field, according to the magnitude of change in the range of colours.
The use of tiny quantities of rare fabrics adds to the singularity of each work in the Series.
